日記を書く習慣を持つ小学4年生の男の子が、ある日、お母さんがこっそり僕の日記を読んでいるところを見てしまった。怒った僕は、明日の日記を書くことにした。これならきっと読まれても恥ずかしくないし、お母さんも驚くだろうから。しかし、その日記が大騒動を巻き起こしてしまうんです。

この本は、私が小学生の時からあったけれど、気になりつつ一度も読んだことはなかった。面白くて読めて良かった♪ 息子にも、主人公の男の子のように毎日日記を書いて欲しいけれど、読めないし、書けないし、夢のまた夢だな。。。。

1年生からずっとリレーの選手に選ばれていた加奈は、6年生の時にアンカーに選ばれますが、運動会当日、彼女の失敗のため失格になってしまいました。それを知った家族が、彼女を励ますために、自分たちの失敗の話を始めます。加奈のいとこやおばさんたちの話す失敗は、個人完結的なもの、または迷惑を掛けるのは家族のみで、加奈のように他人にも影響を与えてしまうものではないのですが、人は失敗しながら大きくなっていくんだという、加奈のおじいちゃんたちが伝えたいメッセージはしっかりと加奈にも伝わっていったようです。最後に、おじさんが失敗談をして、それは戦後7~8年後という時代の話ですが、子どもの驚くべき思いやりだけでなく、自分の失敗に対する葛藤があり、でもやはり素直に謝るという態度にも、心を打たれるものがありました。

日本語がダメな息子に読み聞かせていますが、小学校中学年向けの本です。日本語の中学年向けの作品も面白いので、息子に読み聞かせつつ、ハマりそうな私がいます。

☆ストーリー☆

冬の日の夕方、6人の同じクラスの子供たちが、学校の飼育小屋から学校隣の工事現場に逃げ込んだうさぎを捕まえようと協力しあう話。と書いてしまうと単純だけど、図書館で借りたら予約待ちで、かつ延長不可の図書ということで、1986年の初版だけど大人気の本。1986年が初版で主人公たちが4年生と言うと、どんぴしゃりで私の年齢。だから共感するところが多いのか、そもそも10歳児というのはこんな感じなのか分からない。でも、嘘をついているつもりはないけれど、結果的に嘘になってしまう転校生の男の子、しゃべらない転校生の女の子、性格に問題を抱えていると、大人の感覚だと感じてしまう子どもたちに普通に接する他の子供たち。この大した事件でもない出来事を詳細に掘り下げている作者の力には脱帽でした。大人が読んでも面白かった。

伯母に美味しいお菓子を届けようとするヒキガエルがフクロウに捕まってしまう話。優しいヒキガエルとの交流よって、孤独なフクロウの心の変化があるのかないか、ハラハラする部分もあり、フクロウがヒキガエルのことを好きになって食べないように、と祈るような気持にもなります。優しい物語で個人的にはとても好き。

一時帰国中なので日本で読みましたが、原作は英語です。

正直で素朴なペニーさんが飼っている家畜たちと、彼らがお祭り(農産物や家畜の品評会)で巻き起こす珍道中のお話。これも英語版はすでに手に入れるのが難しいようですが、日本語翻訳版はまだ手に入るようです。私も面白いと思ったので、きっと日本人のツボにはいる話なんでしょうね。

お空の上の上で、描いた生き物たちを描いている芸術家たちがいて、その一人がLionという言葉にインスピレーションを得て、仲間の芸術家に助けられながらライオンを描いていくという話。彼らの描いた生き物が、地球やその他の場所で、命を与えられて生きていくという仕組みになっています。
